School Crimes in Las Vegas
The short answer to this question is yes. There are minimum punishments for gross misdemeanors committed on the property of a school, at an activity sponsored by a school, or on a school bus:
NRS 193.1605 Minimum punishment for gross misdemeanor committed on property of school, at activity sponsored by school or on school bus.
1. Any person who commits a gross misdemeanor on the property of a public or private school, at an activity sponsored by a public or private school, or on a school bus or at a bus stop used to load and unload a school bus while the bus is engaged in its official duties:
If convicted, they will be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for not less than 15 days but not more than 364 days and may be punished by a fine of not more than $2,000.
NRS 193.161 Additional or alternative penalty: Felony committed on property of school, at activity sponsored by school or on school bus.
Anyone convicted of a felony on the property of a school, an activity sponsored by a school, or on a school bus on top of the term prescribed by the statute for the crime will also be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for a minimum term of 1 year and not more than 20 years. In determining the additional penalty, the court will consider: facts and circumstances of the crime, the person’s criminal history, the impact of the crime on any victim(s), mitigating facts, other relevant information.
If the crime was bad enough that the person who committed the felony intended to create a great risk of death or substantial bodily harm to more than one person by means of a weapon, device, or course of action that could hurt more than one person, the felony could rise as high as category A. A category A felony could lead to a penalty of life without parole, life with parole beginning after 20 years’ served, or a set term of 50 years with a chance for parole after 20 years.
